About the Neighborhood
Central City
In the 1830s, Central City was considered the “back of town”. It was a refuge for immigrant and ethnic populations, including Irish, Italian, German, Jewish, and Eastern European immigrants. It was swamp land and therefore less desirable.
The neighborhood really developed when the land was drained at the turn-of-the-century. Historic Dryades Street became a thriving shopping district that rivaled Canal Street at a time when African Americans weren’t permitted to shop on Canal.
Today, Central City is still centered around that main street - now called Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard. It is home to one-of-a-kind locally-owned restaurants, active community centers, and one of the best annual neighborhood festivals in the city - Central City Fest!
