About the Neighborhood

Uptown - Irish Channel

neighborhood-mobile-map-v21.jpg

A sub-section of the larger Uptown area of New Orleans, the Irish Channel is famous for it’s shotgun homes. Named for the influx of Irish immigrants in the 1830s, this was a working class neighborhood bordering the historically affluent Garden District neighborhood.

The legacy of that Irish immigration lives on in the annual Irish Channel St. Patrick’s Day festivities. It’s a mini-Mardi Gras and one of the most famous St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in the United States. Go to the block party and have a drink with neighbors or catch a cabbage in the parade - you’ll have quite an experience to say the least!

Also of note, Magazine Street tops the Irish Channel boundaries with its renowned restaurants, bars, and boutique shops. The walkability of this neighborhood is one of its most appealing features.

Enjoy!
