About the Neighborhood
Gentilly
This area was originally the Gentilly plantation and remained mostly rural until the 20th century. Drainage technology developed at that time, allowing for the swampy land to become habitable. In 1909, the first planned community in the area launched - a style of living we have come to know as the modern suburb.
Dillard University was established here in 1930 and from there, the area saw increasingly more suburban development. The University of New Orleans and Southern University at New Orleans were established in 1956 as the neighborhood population exploded.
Most of the architecture and style of living in Gentilly therefore reflects mid-century conveniences such as modern construction techniques and automobiles. While the area isn’t as walkable compared to older neighborhoods of New Orleans, it offers more greenspace, off-street parking, and main avenues to wherever you want to go in the city!
